Sweet Settings

This year I am hosting a small brunch after church on Sunday and thought I would share my low-cost idea.

The menu
Turkey Sausages with Apples sliced diagonally
Turkey Bacon, Spinach and Fontina Frittata (adapted from that recipe)
Fruit Juice Bar

For the Table Settings I am painting some lovely little eggs I
found on-line and put everyone's initials on the egg. (see photo below)
Then using paper shreds (you can do this yourself if you have a shredder, which we don't. And I found them at the dollar store, so it was a win there.) I am making little nests like my sweet and amazing friend Jessica did last year as seen here.
 The table is going to be done all in white with white ceramic birds and other items down the center.
The feel is relaxed garden and I think it will be great! 

With everything I looked around my house and gathered items I already had together. The same approach was used for the recipes. I went to my pantry and freezer, made a list of what I had to work with then scoured pinterest and cooking light for recipes that required the least amount of purchases. 

We will be sure to post pictures but wanted to give you some ideas in case you were in a pinch with figuring something out for Sunday!

Filled With Wonder And Amazement
Delight fills his eyes as he hears the word
"Sweet Treat"
Together we measure the ingredients and mix the batter.
The egg is added, the caution given.
"Not now my son, this isn't fit to eat."
Poured into the pan with anticipation building and the questions begin.
"How much longer?"
We talk of a journey taken long ago, from the cradle to the tomb.
His eyes brim with questions, these words don't hold meaning for him like they do for me.
Whispers of a son's longing to return home, a celebration awaiting him that is unlike any other.
His heart opens at the thought of coming home to his father after being away.
And still we wait.
And watch.
Speaking of friends dear to this son who also waited anxiously.
Of the concept of miracle, something that wasn't but now is.
A batter unfit to eat, but not for much longer.
Slowly the wheels turn.
This flour, sugar and spice now changed and transformed.
The buzzer rings as his little face glows.
Soon this miracle can be enjoyed by us all.
Basking in the wonder and amazement of this season our hearts united in anticipation.
For this year we celebrate, celebrate, celebrate the return of a Son to his Father.

Easter Baskets Candy Solution
Easter, Easter, Easter. I love the idea of making our own Easter Baskets and after the success of last year I have already begun to gather for this year. Not only was this super cost effective last year, but having control over each and every item given to our sweet child set our minds at ease. 

This year I was struggling with the candy overload that always comes with holidays and came up with the idea of putting cars in the eggs instead of candy. So I went onto ebay, my own personal vortex, and found a lot of cars. Perfect! If you haven't ever bought things in "lots" you really ought to give it a try. True, you might end up with more than you need (ahem, 150 ties later...) but this can be solved two ways. One, you go in one it with someone else. Two, you save the excess for one of the other holidays needing items such as these (birthday, stocking stuffer, Happy Spring Day, etc...)

So at this point these lovely items will grace our sons Easter Baskets:

Cars!!! We will split the "lot" with a good friend.

Vintage Books

Mini Containers of Playdoh, we will split this set up as well.

DIY Thank-You Cards

We made our Thank You cards for Christmas this year and loved how they turned out. Using some gold and silver cards that were heavily discounted right after the holidays we decided to adorn them with a banner theme.


Using cardstock we cut out little banner shapes.

Then stamped them with the word Thankful.

While these dried we cut pieces of Jute and glued them along the top of the card. 


We thought the Jute made them less holiday and more shabby-chic.

After the ink had dried we glue the little banner pieces right under the Jute line. Voila!

on our Pinterest board.

A Mother's Day Wish
This year I have a few simple requests for Mother's Day. 
Something gifted.

Something tasted.

His love remembered.

All three of us rested.

A memory made while there were three, before we became four.

What are your wishes for Mother's Day? We hope it is memorable and unique to you.

Easter Basket Our Way
We wanted to follow up with our post about the insanity of the Easter Basket Market. We received some great ideas and love all of the feedback, here and on Facebook. We really loved the idea of putting pieces that represent parts of the Easter Story inside the plastic eggs, and think we will use it next year when Baby Love is just a little older. 

For his basket we used a lovely old wicker one that we had on hand and Abbey wove ribbon through it's sides. Wrapped ribbon around the handle and used some straw "stuff" we had on hand. For his Easter Egg Hunt Basket we used his little yellow basket that holds his sand toys and wove ribbon through that as well. It has holes on the bottom so the grass and dirt sifted out long before we reached the car. The nice part is the ribbon can be reused as it wasn't glued or cut into small strips. Win!


For the contents we started gathering items a few weeks ago, whenever we saw them. There was the excellent deal on a season of Ducktales, a series we both loved as children. The Looney Tunes bowling and golf set are from Marshalls, on sale. And the icing were little toys that we picked up from the dollar section of Michaels. It is amazing what we have found in that section! We filled the little plastic eggs with change for his piggy bank and 5 little chocolate bugs. The winner in that competition was the change. He was so excited to fill his little piggy bank! The final item and the most time intensive were a set of vintage animal flash cards. After searching websites that had royalty free vintage images of animals Abbey cropped them and added the letters. Laminating them at Kinkos was the final step and they were done. 

We snuck in and left it on his little table.
All of the items, minus the chocolate, were ones that we desired to add to his toy box and have been on a list for awhile. In the aftermath of the holiday there isn't anything that is headed towards the trash, except maybe some of that candy from the easter egg hunt. We have so many thoughts on what to make for next year's basket and will mark our calendars to start earlier. What did you do for Easter Baskets this year?

Sweet Love

In honor of Valentines Day this year I wanted to continue the love-fest and share with you a few details about our weekend of love.

To kick off the weekend I surprised the Mr. with some home-made sweet somethings. Inspired by my dear friend Jessica's craftiness I adapted her idea to fit my style and limitations. Crafts are complicated in a small space with an eager toddler. More so when trying to make it a surprise. My sewing machine isn't readily accessible so here is how I adapted the idea:

*Instead of hearts that were the same size I cut most of them much larger and then some smaller ones.
*I also cut out  the letters L-O-V-E and our son's little hand prints to personalize the decorations.
*Instead of ribbon or string I cut out strips from fabric that was leftover from my Halloween costume (pictures here).
* To add character I cut smaller sections of fabric then double-knotted it together. Love how the little knots look!
*I used Craft Glue, my best friend, instead of sewing the pieces together, and didn't double side them. This saved tons of time and allowed it to remain a secret as Mr. didn't have to snag the sewing machine for me.
* I did a variety of little banners all over and only one window with the strings hanging down. A good plan if there are little hands or pets in the home.

A few little extra details:
*To weight the bottoms of strings I put a little bow/knot at the base.
*I purchased a wonderful old book that had thick, red-tinted pages that would hold up well to eager little hands. $3.99 from Goodwill and I still have TONS of pages leftover for another time.
* The extra hearts were taped to the bathroom mirror, scattered on surfaces and other random places for a sweet touch.
* I switched out all of the pictures in our home with wedding pictures and put them everywhere!
